Wandering off-base

It’s just before closing time

Slick roads, powdered white

Two cars at full stop

Quarter mile from

Where hands are in the air

Red handkerchief on a breeze

Then down

The aftermath

Resembling abstract art

All cheers and jeers

Following screams

And silence

Fourteen day hold

(Thank whatever deities arrive)

Another six-and-a-half months of recovery

& we still walk with a slight limp
