Dissecting the Shadows

Thirteen. You asked, and that’s how many
encountered long after the blisters
healed wound and
open sores
swallowing salt to soothe
every time.

I tried denial- it slammed the door
clear into next Tuesday
whispers become shouts in the halls
walls ringing in contrary vibrations

I’m only as invisible as physics allows
sometimes the darkness helps
though I make noises
some rustling of clothing
slightly hurried fore
if I was a snake I’d’ve taken a bite
no ID in two steps or less

“whatever.” they say, dismissive
evidence ignored in favor of self-preservation
outgrowing the long nose
swinging from the expressionless mask
unhurried removal
dark stains left on mattresses
and the assurance of
the condemned
